Тема: Around London

Форма уроку:    урок – подорож.

Мета уроку:


  • Тренувати навички мовленнєвої діяльність учнів, читання та аудіювання;
  • розширити лексичний запас учнів, активізувати вживання лексики з теми «Лондон» у мовленні;
  • прочитати текст з вилученням детальної інформації для реалізації комунікативних задач.


  • розширити знання учнів про визначні місця столиці Великобританії


  • розвивати увагу, пам'ять та здогадку учнів, фонематичний слух, вміння здійснювати самоконтроль
  • розвивати вміння висловлювати свою думку англійською мовою;

І.  1) Greetings

Good morning! Glad to see you!

2) Aims and the topic of the lesson

Today we are going to talk about the capital of Great Britain and have an excursion around it. You will:

  • revise your topical vocabulary;
  • read the texts about London's sights;
  • enlarge your knowledge on them
  • check your knowledge doing the test

T: Let's start our lesson. Look at this quotation, read it and translate.


"If you are tired of London,

You are tired of life..."

Do you agree with this quotation? Why? Why not?

P: As I know there are a lot of picturesque parks and squares in London.

P: I know exactly that there are many museums and ancient buildings there.

P: Because there are a lot of places of interest in London.

Why do people compare London with life?


            Well, before we start our journey we should do some preparations and pack our suitcases. First let’s practice in pronunciation of some proper names (слайд 3):

T: And now we are going to see them. Let’s watch a short video and remember the sights of London. Your task is to name as many sights as you have seen in order not to miss them during your trip to London.

What sights did you see? Do you know any other?

            T:  And now close your eyes and visit Great Britain and its capital London. As you know, any excursion is impossible without a guide. Let me introduce our guides Karina and Pavlo. They will help you learn new and interesting facts about London and its sights. On your desks you can find cards with tables. While watching and listening complete them with interesting facts.


P1: Good morning dear friends!

Welcome to London!

Well, as you know London, is the capital of Great Britain. It's a very big city. London is situated on the river Thames. About 9 ml people live in London. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is also a very old city. London is 2000 years old. London consists of 3 main parts: the City, the West End and the East End. The City is the Heart of London; it's a financial and business centre. There are many banks, offices and firms there. The West End is the richest part of London. The main interesting places are situated there. And the East End is a working part of LondonСлайд 5-10


P2: We start our tour from Trafalgar Square. It's the most popular place for people to meet. In the middle of the square there is Nelson's Column, which is 51 m. high. Слайд11

 Now we are coming to Buckingham Palace. It is the most famous place in London. It is the home of the Queen. There are 600 rooms in it. It has an indoor swimming pool and a cinema. Слайд 12  Near it there is St. Jame's Park. It is one of the royal Parks. It is the oldest and the smallest among them. There you can find a lake and see pelicans and ducks. People like to rest in here. Слайд 13


P1:  In front of us you can see the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. The Houses of Parliament is the seat of the British government. Big Ben is one of the most famous clocks in the world. Слайд 14

And now look at this Picture!

One of the greatest English churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, is not far from the Tower of London. The Famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world. Слайд 15


P2: And this is a museum. Madame Tussaud's is a wax museum. It is famous all over the world. There are a lot of kings, queens, politicians and stars. You can see famous people from the past and famous people of today. It is very popular – two million people visit it every year. There are about 4 hundred figures in the museum. Слайд 16

And now we are crossing Tower Bridge over the river Thames. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful bridges in London. It is more than 100 yearsСлайд 17, 18

And now you can see the British Museum. It has one of the largest libraries in the world. There are many old books and manuscripts there. Many great people worked in this libraryСлайд 19


            T: Thank you very much. Did you like the excursion? Which of the sights did you like most and why? What did you learn about it? Use your tables. Start your answer with a phrase on the screen. Card # 1 Слайд 20

III. Relaxation

            After such a long excursion you need a rest. Watch this video and have a walk around London and enjoy the beauty of it. What can people do in London?

 T: I hope you enjoyed your walk. London is a historical city too. Every sight in it has its history. You are going to meet 2 the most famous historical sights of London – St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Tower. Make up 2 groups according to colourful stripes on your desks and take your seats at the table. Слайд 23

Here you can find texts and tables. Each group has a different table. Your task is to read the text first and remember as many details as possible. You have 3 minutes to complete the task.



Everybody coming to London for the first time wants to see St. Paul's Cathedral. This is the third cathedral with this name which London has had. The two others were burnt down, the first in 1086 and the second in 1666.

Christopher Wren was an architect who had already built many buildings. In 1675, he started his greatest work. For 35 years the building of St. Paul's Cathedral went on, and Wren was an old man before it was finished.

From far away you can see the huge dome with a golden ball and cross on the top. The inside of the cathedral is very beautiful. After looking around, you can climb 263 steps to the Whispering Gallery, above the library, which runs round the dome. It is called this because if someone whispers close to the wall on one side, a person with an ear close to the wall on the other side can hear what is said. Then, if you climb another 118 steps, you will be able to stand outside the dome and look over London.


Text 2. The Tower of London

     The tower of London is the most interesting place in London because it reflects the history of the country. William the Conqueror built it of white stone in 1066. It was called the White Tower. The Tower of London was a fortress, a palace, a prison and a King’s Zoo. Now it is a museum. You can see a lot of interesting things in the halls of the White Tower. The symbol of the Tower of London is six black ravens. People keep them in the Tower and look after them very well because they believe that London will be rich while ravens live there. That is why the birds have clipped wings and are guarded carefully.

      Nowadays the Tower is a museum. But in this prison the jewels are locked up. The jewels are the famous “Crown Jewels” of England. According to the traditions the Tower is guarded by Beefeaters. They still wear their 16th century bright and colourful Tudor uniforms.                    


Now I want you to choose a person who will join another group. Good! Your task is to ask a representative from another group questions about the sight and complete the tables. You have 4 minutes to complete the task.  Card #3+texts


IV. Conclusion

We have seen so much today.

So it’s time to see and check what you have learned. Open the net books on your desks and find the test on London. Choose the correct answer and find out your mark. Please, tell me your marks. Thanks!

         At the beginning of our lesson we discussed the quotation. Is it really true, that one cannot be tired of London? Why?
